St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center is hosting its annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo / Skateboard Safety Jam and SAFE KIDS
Day on Saturday, May 10, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The purpose of the event is to provide children ages
3-17 and their families with an opportunity to learn about safety and prevention while participating in sports and
other recreational activities.
The day includes bicycle inspections conducted by the Economy Bike Shop and the Lawrenceville Police Department.
Bicycle tires, frames, handlebars, chain guards, and reflectors are checked, and parents receive a check-list for
each bike indicating if anything needs to be repaired. Children are then given a free bike helmet, which is fitted
by one of the St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center's therapists. They may ride a bicycle safety course, which is
organized by the New Jersey State Police, where they illustrate that they are aware of traffic signals, hand signals,
parked cars, and how to avoid unexpected obstacles.
The water safety programs will be conducted by the Hamilton YMCA and will include games and other activities geared
towards water safety. St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center will give away a limited number of Personal Flotation Devices
for children up to 90 pounds.
The Lawrenceville Fire Department will provide an engine that the children can ride, and will display a small house
designed to teach about fire hazards. Other participants include Capital Health System, Robert Wood Johnson University
Hospital at Hamilton, St. Francis Medical Center, and Princeton HealthCare System. The two minor league sports teams
in Mercer County, the Trenton Titans hockey team and the Trenton Thunder baseball team, will each be on site with their
mascots and will provide interactive games for the children. Bristol-Myers Squibb will present an exhibit on hazardous
materials and Coleman Buick Pontiac GMC will provide their Titans Mites-on-Ice truck. The Children's Specialized
Hospital, Greater Mercer TMA, Greater Area Trenton YMCA, Hamilton YMCA, Lawrence Hopewell Trail, Lawrence Neighborhood
Service Center, MRI Center at Lawrenceville, Kidsbridge Children's Museum, McCaffrey's Supermarkets and
PNC Bank will also participate.
Children must pre-register by email to jmillner@slrc.org or call (609) 896-9500, ext. 2212.
