The Inpatient Brain Injury Program

The SLRC inpatient brain injury program offers the benefits of a large metropolitan rehab center partnered with an extremely personalized approach to therapy. While each patient’s road to regaining function is a very personal one, the journey begins with an in-depth evaluation overseen by a physiatrist, followed by an intensive therapeutic schedule that includes programs activities of daily living, mobility, memory, orientation and cognition. Therapies often take into account the patient’s life before the injury. If a patient took an interest in music pre-injury, for instance, then music is incorporated into the therapy. If a patient was an accountant, then working with numbers may be an integral part of assisting the patient in putting his or her life back together again.

The unit is closed, so that patients can have the advantage of moving freely instead of being self-contained in their rooms. The recreation room offers computer access, television and games and is specially lit in a calming manner to reduce agitation, a common symptom of brain injury. A model apartment is currently being developed to help aid patients in self-care and community reintegration. It will also be a comfortable meeting place where families can talk with social workers to determine what comes next in the recovery process. Patients and their extended families can also take advantage of on-site brain injury support groups.

When a loved one suffers a brain injury, it affects the entire family. While the road to recovery can be challenging, the inpatient brain injury unit at SLRC helps put the lives of their patients back into focus once more.
