About the Inpatient Brain Injury Team

When a loved one suffers a brain injury in an accident or through a stroke, it can be an overwhelming time for everyone involved. The SLRC inpatient brain injury team helps prepare patients and their families for what to expect as they take their first steps on the road to recovery.

When a patient is admitted to the unit, he or she is met and evaluated by a physiatrist, a physician with a specialty in rehabilitative medicine. Patients are given evaluations in the areas of psychology, speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy and therapeutic recreation. Consultative services with other specialists are also available as needed.

Throughout the course of treatment, doctors, therapists and a 24-hour nursing staff meet regularly to develop personalized care plans for each patient that maximize each individual’s potential recovery. As treatment progresses, social workers work with the patient and his or her family, offering support throughout each milestone in care.
