The occupational therapist will evaluate and assist patients in improving self-care abilities through interventions that foster and support independence. From cardiovascular and strength exercises in the OT gym, to functional tasks in the OT apartment, patients work to maintain physical conditioning and re-learn practical skills required in everyday life. The occupational therapist may also provide a vision screen when necessary and recommend further consultation with the neuro-optometrist when appropriate.
In occupational therapy the patient:
- has the opportunity to practice dressing and bathing
- navigates safely throughout household areas, practices transferring in/out of bed, on/off of a toilet, and in/out of a shower stall or tub
- engages in cognitive exercises that promote optimal performance in problem solving, expression, and memory
- will attend a “check out” with family members and/or caregivers to receive instruction on safe techniques at home
