Physical Therapy

In Physical Therapy, the patient will work at his/her maximum potential to regain the highest level of mobility possible. Initially, the physical therapist will perform an evaluation to assess the patient's physical and functional status, taking into consideration the patient’s cognitive ability. From these findings, the physical therapist will develop an individualized treatment program that addresses the patient’s as well as the family’s goals.

Each patient’s Physical Therapy Program will include:

  • Promoting appropriate movement and coordination
  • Maximizing flexibility of the trunk, arms and legs
  • Re-educating and strengthening the muscles of the truck, arms and legs
  • Educating the patient of safe wheelchair management and propulsion
  • Re-learning functional skills such as standing up from a chair, walking and stair climbing
  • Improve balance and endurance
  • Education family members and/or friends on how to best assist the patient in preparation for discharge
  • Determining the necessary adaptive equipment (canes, wheelchairs, walkers, braces) to enhance the patient’s functional status
  • Instructing the patient on an exercise program to be completed at home after discharge.
