Therapeutic Recreation services begin with an initial evaluation, including obtaining the patient’s previous leisure interests, assessing current cognitive, physical and social/behavioral level of functioning, and community involvement. A treatment program of individual and/or group therapy is then designed to address the patient’s areas of difficulty. Modifications and use of adaptive techniques/equipment is always considered to allow full participation by the patient.
Treatment sessions may include:
- Activities such as computer, board/card games, and word/number puzzles help to improve attention, concentration, memory, problem solving, decision making, turn taking and flexibility of thought.
- Physically-oriented activities such as writing, tabletop games, and sports (ie. fishing, golf) may be implemented to focus on improving coordination, endurance and balance.
- Discussions related to community accessibility, awareness of barriers and safety. Resources are provided and, when feasible, a community outing may be scheduled to provide a supervised situation to practice skills learned at the Center in a functional setting.
- Preparation of the patient for participation in leisure activities during their free time. Family members are encouraged to assist in the carryover of activities/skills during the patient’s non-therapy time.
