Functional Capacity Evaluations

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an assessment performed by a licensed physical therapist trained in the administration and interpretation of this test. A FCE is a systematic process of assessing an individual’s physical capacities and functional abilities. The evaluation establishes the physical level of work an individual can perform. A FCE is useful in determining job placement, job accommodation, or the ability to return to work after injury or illness.

A FCE is appropriate for:

  • Individuals who have achieved maximum medical improvement and continue to be at risk for re-injury or are unable to return to work.
  • Individuals who need to have their physical capacities assessed to determine their disability status.
  • Individuals who need their functions assessed prior to a vocational job search or a return to work.
  • Individuals who need their physical abilities evaluated for medical and/or legal reasons.
