Neuropsychologists are psychologists with specialized training in how the brain works and how injuries and diseases affect
the brain. They also assist people in recovering from and managing injuries or diseases of the brain.
A neuropsychological examination of the brain determines the health of the brain by measuring how it is
functioning. It is one of many ways to identify problems in the brain. The pattern of results
from a neuropsychological examination can help diagnose a suspected injury or disease of the brain.
Such a diagnosis helps with treatment planning, setting appropriate goals (such as employment), and making
recommendations that will increase the likelihood of a patient’s success.
Neuropsychological examinations involve non-invasive tasks such as answering questions. There are no needles or X-rays, etc. These exams commonly measure:
- dexterity
- accuracy of visual processing
- language
- attention
- speed in performing simple tasks
- memory
- problem solving and reasoning
- emotions
After the examination, a person’s results are compared with healthy people of the same age, and patterns of strength and weakness emerge. These patterns help the neuropsychologist clarify the diagnosis and make recommendations regarding treatment.
