At SLRC, outpatient speech therapy is most often provided to stroke patients, as well as those with traumatic brain, mild head injuries and other neurological disorders. Many SLRC patients transition from the center’s inpatient program, although it is also common for patients to arrive at SLRC from other rehab centers or strictly for outpatient therapy. SLRC patients are offered a completely individualized program of care, which includes work in such key areas as speech, language, cognition and swallowing. Regaining skills in reading, writing, verbal reasoning and short-term memory is also emphasized.
Another treatment that has helped earn SLRC its reputation for healing is its use of VitalStim Therapy. Through the placing of electrodes on key areas of the face and neck, VitalStim allows the patient to experience movement in weakened or paralyzed muscles when other swallowing techniques have not proven effective. SLRC has certified VitalStim therapists on staff to administer this revolutionary new treatment. VitalStim is the only device currently approved by the FDA for the treatment of swallowing dysfunction.
Since consistency in care is one of the most important characteristics of a successful recovery, each speech therapy patient enjoys the comfort of working with one speech therapist during their rehabilitation. Ongoing patient and family education and training is provided during therapy so that strategies can be reinforced at home in order to maximize recovery.
