Stroke Team

We have a team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech and language pathologists with specialized training and experience in the treatment and evaluation of stroke.

Our physical and occupational therapists have received training or achieved certification in neurodevelopmental treatment of hemiplegia (weakness on one side of the body). In addition, a physical therapist certified in vestibular (inner ear disorder) rehabilitation is on staff.

Occupational therapists on staff have received training in new approaches to improve arm function after stroke. Our therapists are using the Functional Tone Management (F.T.M.) System to improve recovery of the upper extremity. For more information about the F.T.M. System visit SAEBO.com. St. Lawrence is a Clinical Center of Excellence for the NESS H-200 Neuroprosthetic and Rehabilitation Program designed to improve arm function through the use of an arm splint combined with electrical stimulation. For more information about this program visit Bionessinc.com.

Our Speech and Language pathologists are certified in VitalStim Therapy used to improve swallowing function through the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation. The VitalStim device is the only dysphagia (swallowing dysfunction) device currently approved by the FDA for the treatment of dysphagia.

Psychology/Neuropsychology services are available and considered essential to address the emotional adjustment following a stroke. Our neuropsychologists perform examinations that clarify for the patient and their families the impact of the stroke on brain function. This is very helpful when planning treatment and setting goals.

A Program Manager (Social Worker) will serve as the link between the patient and his or her family, as well as the treatment team, insurance providers and the community.
